South African opener Aiden Markram is all set to play the early part of the English County Championship with Durham. It happened to be the home of another Proteas opener, Stephen Cook last year. Markram has been a relative newcomer on the international circuit. However, he has already led the senior team in the absence of Faf du Plessis during the OI series against the Men in Blue.

Markram will arrive at the Emirates Riverside in time for the opening fixture for Durham. They will face Kent on April 21 to begin their campaign. The Australia South Africa Test series will end three weeks before the start of the English County Championship. He will stay on until the start of the Royal London One Day Cup in the middle of May.

Meanwhile, New Zealand opener Tom Latham who was part of the Durham outfit last season will take over the opening spot from Markram when the white ball format begins. The southpaw is also expected to lead Durham’s Royal London campaign. Durham officials stated that they were also looking at different options for the 2018 Vitality Blast campaign.

Ian Botham expresses his happiness at the inclusion of Markram

Chairman of Durham, Sir Ian Botham was happy with the inclusion of Markram. He felt that Markram will provide the confidence and maturity at the top of the batting order.

“Aiden offers confidence and maturity at the top of the batting order and despite being just 23 years old, he has already been recognised by South Africa as a leader in the dressing room.

‘It’s great news that we will have Aiden at the beginning of our Championship campaign, especially with Tom Latham, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood all missing due to their international and IPL commitments. We’re delighted to have both Aiden and Tom at Emirates Riverside this season and I am confident they will both contribute to what we hope will be a successful season,” he added.
