Right Now, Virat Is Our Captain: Ajinkya Rahane Focussed On Staying In The Present

Indian Test vice-captain and its middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane isn’t thinking about the leadership role that he will have to play in the upcoming series in the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli.
Virat Kohli will travel back to India following the culmination of the first Test at the Adelaide Oval, post which Ajinkya Rahane will lead the side in the remainder of the series.
But Rahane isn’t thinking that far ahead. He believes in staying in the moment, and for him, Virat Kohli is still the captain, whom he js looking forward to assisting in whatever capacity he can, during the pink-ball Test.
“I believe staying in the moment and present. Right now, Virat is our captain. We think about this Test match and then after that when he leaves, we will think. So for me, it is about this Test match, helping Virat out and then taking it forward,” Ajinkya Rahane said during the virtual media conference.
The first Test of the four-match series will be a day-night affair at the Adelaide Oval.
Rahane admitted that it will be a huge challenge for the batsmen to counter the moving pink ball especially during the twilight phase but he exuded confidence in his teams’ ability to adapt to the conditions and negate the threat.
“Definitely it is a challenge. The ball behaves differently during the day and behaves differently once the lights are on. So as a batsman I think the focus will be the key. As long as you can focus as a batsman…communication will be the key among the two batters. Batting in the twilight period, those 40-50 minutes will be the key. If you bat well in that situation it will be good. Overall it was a good outing in the day-night warm-up. The start will be the key in the Test,” Ajinkya Rahane added.
