Former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel in a recent interview said he wants his national team ‘to at least compete’ with India in their upcoming ODI series. The Proteas will tour India, for a three-match ODI series, that begins from 12th March.

Ahead of a very crucial series, Morkel said that beating Team India, in their backyard will be very difficult, but South Africa are confident nonetheless, having whitewashed Australia 3-0 lately. They have a relatively new head coach in Mark Boucher, who himself played for the Proteas.

Under Boucher though, South Africa defeated Australia in the ODI series but lost the T20I series at home by a 2-1 narrow margin.

Albie Morkel expects South Africa to compete with Team India:

The three matches between India and South Africa will be played in Dharamsala, Lucknow and Kolkata respectively.

Of the last ten matches played between these two sides, the Proteas have triumphed on eight occasions, although, Morkel still expects a tough series, given India will play on home turf.

“It was sort of a mixed summer before the new coaching staff took over. Obviously, they had a fantastic win against Australia in the ODI series, after losing the T20 series badly. So, I’m unsure,” Albie Morkel was quoted by Sportstar.

He further added, “Even if a team is in top form, beating India in India is almost an impossible task. It’s going be a tough series for them, but I do expect them to at least compete. India will win it 2-1, but South Africa should compete, especially now that they have the confidence after the series against Australia.”

The first ODI between India and South Africa will be played on Thursday, at HPCA Cricket Stadium, in Dharamsala.
