Angelo Mathews Clears Yo Yo Test

Angelo Mathews could soon return to Sri Lanka ODI team after passing the fitness Test.

The former Sri Lanka skipper was controversially dropped from the ODI squad for the ongoing series against England at home. However, he was retained in the Test team. And ahead of the Test series, he has passed the fitness test.  Mathews lost his place in the ODI team for his poor fitness.

Mathews’ struggles with his fitness was clearly on show during his side’s dismal run in the Asia Cup where they were eliminated at the group stage after suffering two heavy losses against Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Mathews struggled with his fitness and  had played a role in the run-outs of two batting partners during the competition in UAE.

But it was still a surprising decision, considering his batting form. Mathews has been consistent with the bat for the Islanders in the 50-over format. Since the start of 2017, Mathews has made 888 ODI runs at 59.20, across 22 innings.

In Sri Lanka’s most recent bilateral series, against South Africa, he was their highest run-scorer. Mathews  scored 235 runs at an average of 78.33.

However, the team-management did not compromise with the fitness and dropped Mathews for the England series. Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha had admitted that Mathews lacked the “cricket fitness” to field for 50 overs.

Well, Mathews has now cleared the Test and is likely to return to the ODI team. He took to Twitter to confirm the news, posting a picture while writing:

“Yo-yo test ✅ skin fold test ✅ #fitnesstesting ✅”

Mathews will be next seen in action during the Test series against England. The three-match series will get underway on November 6 at Galle.
