Earlier, it was Mike Hesson, who used to be the head coach of the team. However, ahead of his interview with the BCCI for the national team head coach role, the former Kiwi coach parted ways with the team. Ironically, he joins Royal Challengers Bangalore while former RCBian Anil Kumble joins Kings XI Punjab.

It is a great challenge – Anil Kumble

Speaking of the upcoming season, Anil Kumble hopes to put a fine show in the tournament. Analyzing the previous season, Anil Kumble feels that the team has done brilliantly in the first phase of the tournament but a couple of odd games in the middle changed the momentum. Kumble doesn’t want that to repeat again in the upcoming edition of the tournament.

”I think it is a great challenge and an opportunity for me to get involved in the IPL again. I have seen Kings XI Punjab from close quarters when I was involved with other franchises as a player and as a mentor. It will be nice to work with the owners and some of the players, and I am hoping to make a significant contribution with the team, so looking forward to the challenge,” Anil Kumble said while speaking to KXIP official website.

”The team has not won an IPL title as of yet, so that is our main goal. In terms of the biggest challenge, we have seen in the recent past that the start has been good for Kings XI but after a couple of losses, the momentum shifts. We have been close to qualifying but we miss out by small margins. So it’s important to keep the momentum over 14 games and have a sustained performance for the team to make it to the last four, where it’s anybody’s game.”

It is important to put together a proper structure:

Further, the former Indian head coach quoted that everything depends on the proper planning, as every team got the best players in their ranks. Kumble believes that he can help the players be in the right kind of mindset with the help of the support staff, who always works to their best.

”It is important to put together a proper structure and my role would be to get players ready for the challenge and make sure they are up for it. The support staff can help in terms of strategies, ensure players achieve success and that they are in the right space so to go there and play freely. That’s important in a T20 competition because the IPL is such a format that every game is a close finish and that all the eight teams are closely matched,” he added.

Well, it is one heck of a signing by Kings XI Punjab. Anil Kumble has always been a master of this game and knows how to yield success for the team. The presence of Anil Kumble is going to be a massive help for the youngsters in the team as well.
