Afghanistan Cricket Board, on Wednesday, re-appointed Asghar Afghan as their captain for all formats and thus sacked Rashid Khan. Earlier this year, Afghanistan had sensationally sacked Asghar Afghan as their captain just days ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019. The ACB had removed Asghar Afghan from the captaincy just three months before the marquee event and appointed Gulbadin Naib in his place.

It was a move which met with a lot of criticism and backlash from fans and the Afghan players. The move did not pay off as Afghanistan finished last in the World Cup without winning a single game. Few days later, they named Rashid Khan as the captain for all the three formats before taking another u-turn.

Asghar Afghan reappointed as Afghanistan’s captain – ACB

Perhaps, the poor show by Afghanistan in the series against West Indies has prompted the officials to make the tough call. The right-handed middle-order batsman accepted the role to lead the team in all three forms of the game. It also means that Asghar will lead the team in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2020 unless any shocking decisions by the board comes in between.

“As per the decision by ACB Top management, senior player Asghar Afghan is reappointed as team Afghanistan’s captain across formats,” ACB wrote on its official Wednesday.

So far, Asghar Afghan appeared in 4 Tests, 111 ODI matches and 66 T20I games for Afghanistan. The flamboyant batsman maintained an average of 35.57, 24.48 and 20.41, respectively. Besides his batting stats, Asghar Afghan helped Afghanistan rise to greater heights with his incredible captaincy in the limited-overs format.
