Ashes 2023: "You Are Killing The Goose That Lays Golden Eggs" - Ian Bishop Believes Jofra Archer Should Stay Away From Red Ball Cricket For A While

Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop believes that Jofra Archer should stay away from red-ball cricket for a while, following the recurrence of a stress fracture in his right elbow, which has ruled him out of the Ashes series in 2023.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Stump Mic podcast, Bishop emphasized the importance of workload management and strengthening the core strength in the body, especially for fast bowlers who play across formats. He also highlighted the need to avoid over bowling them, which can lead to injuries and limit their longevity.

Bishop referred to Jofra Archer’s workload during the 2019 Ashes series, where he bowled 156 overs across four Tests, and noted that he was over bowled, which could have contributed to his current injury.
He likened over-bowling to “killing the goose that lays the golden egg”, as it can lead to stress injuries and compromise a bowler’s longevity and effectiveness. Bishop acknowledged Jofra Archer’s athleticism and bowling action, which he described as “poetry in motion”, but stressed that over-bowling and workload mismanagement could undo all of that.

Bishop also spoke from his personal experience of dealing with injuries, which limited his international career to just 43 Tests and 84 ODIs. He shared how he had to change his bowling action due to a stress fracture, but then struggled to revert to his original action when it didn’t work out. He also had to overcome mental hurdles and doubts about his ability to bowl quick and push his body to its fullest potential after suffering physical trauma.
“It [Jofra Archer’s] is a good action. I wake up in the morning – and I’ve said this to ESPNcricinfo before – if I hear Jofra Archer’s bowling, I snap out of my sleep, because I love the athleticism of the run-up, the high action, it’s poetry in motion. But once he got over bowled and sustained from stress workload, those little injuries, it’s always going to be hard no matter how good the action is.”
Given his experience, Bishop empathized with Jofra Archer and urged him to be carefully managed, as he is a valuable asset to English cricket and has a bright future ahead of him.
He suggested that Archer should not think about red-ball cricket for at least a couple of seasons, in order to recover fully and avoid exacerbating his injury. He also advised Jofra Archer to have someone close to him, who could help him make tough decisions about his workload and future career, especially as he is thinking about his legacy and financial security.
