Chennai Super Kings [CSK] and Royal Challengers Bangalore [RCB] are two of the most followed franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League. But this is where the similarities between these franchises end.
When it comes to performances on the field, Chennai Super Kings has been the most consistent franchise. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led unit has won the coveted IPL title three times besides qualifying for the playoffs on every single occasion.
Royal Challengers Bangalore, on the other hand, has also been enriched with superstars like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle but the franchise has most often than not flattered to deceive.
So, what is the difference between the CSK and RCB? Ashish Nehra, who has played for both the outfits, reckons that it the difference in the management of both sides that have led to contrasting results on the field.
“The team atmosphere at CSK is unique. That’s why the team hasn’t just been successful but extremely consistent,” Ashish Nehra told Aakash Chopra during a recent chat.
“The reason for the consistency is India Cements. They have been running cricket in south India for so many years, so they know the game. On top of it, they got a captain like MS Dhoni,” added the former Indian pacer.

One of the reasons behind the success of Chennai Super Kings [CSK] is the consistency in their team selections. And, Nehra hailed their team management for it as they give MS Dhoni total command of the team.
“The CSK management supports MS Dhoni completely. The problem is that management in some franchisees think they know the game better that then players and coaches. MS Dhoni never had to face that. Thus, if there’s no interference and you are able to keep the same team for 2-3 years, the results do come,” Nehra said.
He also added that the continuous changes in the management of RCB has paved the way for their inconsistency on the field.
RCB has always had a strong team but still they have struggled. The management changed three years ago and it has now changed again. I feel the management there has a long way to go when it comes to cricket. But in India, everyone has an opinion on cricket and they have it too,” said Nehra.
He added: “But the business from which they have come and what cricket is there’s a difference of chalk and cheese. Hopefully, they understand it sooner or later,”
Ashish Nehra was the bowling coach of the RCB but his stint was cut short following a backroom staff overhaul after the 2019 IPL.
