Team India has been graced by some of the biggest names in the history of Indian cricket. Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Bishan Singh Bedi, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and the list goes on.

No surprises that the debate over who is India’s greatest match-winner has not been settled yet. And while the jury is still out to decide Indian cricket’s greatest-winner, former India pacer Ashish Nehra has revealed his pick for the same. The former India pacer recently named India’s greatest match-winner although with the ball.

He picked his former teammate and captain Anil Kumble as Team India’s greatest-match winner with the ball.

“First time I saw him was on television only when Anil Kumble was playing for India,” Ashish Nehra said on the Cricket Connected Show on Star Sports. “He had those huge glasses, but as you keep on playing your face, mannerisms and style keeps changing every 5-6 years. But I would definitely agree that with the ball, he was India’s biggest match-winner.”

With a staggering 619 wickets to his name, Kumble is India’s leading wicket-taker in Tests. In 1999, he became only the second bowler in history after England’s Jim Laker to take all 10 wickets in an innings when he picked up all ten wickets against Pakistan. He also has a Test century to his name which came in England.

Brett Lee on Kumble:

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee also lavished praise on the India legend as he recalled the year when he first saw Kumble on the TV. Recalling his first impression of Kumble, Lee said the former India spinner resembled a ‘university student’.

“When he first started playing cricket, a bit like [Daniel] Vettori with the glasses on, a bit like a university student with the look with the glasses. He looked a bit shy and timid but 619 wickets later, 130-odd Tests, a legend of the game but a legend of a guy,” Lee said.
