Afghanistan will go into the Super Four in the Asia Cup on high after beating Bangladesh by 136 runs at the  Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 20 (Thursday).

Meanwhile, Afghanistan skipper won at the toss had said they wanted to put on a good total of around 250. With the plan of batting out their 50 overs, Afghanistan got so caught up wanting to bat through their entire quota of overs that they failed to improvise and cause a switch in momentum. On the other hand, Bangladesh bowled some tight lines, but rushed through the overs with their spinners, ensuring the game moved on quickly.

The pitch was easy to bat on, but the Bangladeshi bowlers kept the run rate under four. Abu Hider, who made his debut, struck twice with the new ball to put Bangladesh top.

Despite the end of his spell, it was hard to keep Hider out of action, who sent Mohammad Shahzad back for 37 with a brilliant catch. Hider timed his jump to perfection to give Shakib Al Hasan his first of the four wickets on the night, breaking a fifty-run stand that helped Afghanistan rebuild their innings.

Shakib then struck to pick up two wickets inside four overs to halt Afghanistan’s run flow. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Samiullah Shenwari (18) then added 38 runs for the fifth wicket, but from 138 for 4, Afghanistan were reduced to 160 for 7, as Shakib showcased his wealth of experience. At 160 for 7 in the 41st over, it didn’t seem like Afghanistan would get to 250, they wanted initially. However, the eighth-wicket pair attacked, ran well between wickets to rotate the strike effectively to put them on the driver’s seat.

Rashid Khan (57*) and Gulbadin Naib (42*) took Afghanistan to 255 for 7 adding 95 runs in just 56 balls.

Meanwhile, in reply, Bangladesh felt the absence of Mushfiqur Rahim, who started this Asia Cup with a bang. Naib continued his dream run as he struck twice as the Tigers lost half of their batters within 79 runs. Furthermore, Rashid Khan bagged two of the prized wickets to knock Bangladesh out of this encounter.

Rashid trapped Shakib (32) while castled Mahmudullah’s (27) timber to put them out of the game. Moreover, Rashid Khan chipped in with a run-out to showcase his all-round skill to beat Bangladesh by 136 runs.
