Asia Cup 2018: Super Four, Match 4 - Bangladesh vs Afghanistan - Twitter Erupts as Bangladesh Seals the Game in the Last Over
Updated - 24 Sep 2018, 03:08 AM
Mustafizur Rahman bowled an outstanding last over to defend eight runs to hand Bangladesh a crucial win against Afghanistan in Super Four clash of this Asia Cup 2018 at Abu Dhabi.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh were in dire straits in the first half of their innings before Mahmudullah and Imrul Kayes led a fine recovery through a 128-run sixth wicket association that lifted the team to a total of 249 for 7. Both Mahmudullah and Kayes scored crucial half-centuries that arrested the slide after Bangladesh were reeling at 87 for 5.
The Tigers have struggled throughout the Asia Cup due to their openers and this was no different. They lost two wickets within the first six overs to put them in a spot of bother. Liton Das was joined by Mushfiqur Rahim and they rebuilt the innings with a 63-run partnership. However, the gloom returned to the Bangladesh camp as Liton’s audacious sweep gave Rashid Khan a wicket in his first over, followed by the run-outs of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur.
Mahmudullah scored more freely and got 74 runs off 81 balls before falling while trying up the ante. Kayes remained till the end to shepherd Bangladesh to a respectable total.
However, Afghanistan didn’t have a smooth start as they lost their first two wickets quite early. They were two down losing their inform batsman Rahmat Shah within the first eight overs. Meanwhile, two timely partnership helped Afghanistan peg back in this game. Mohammad Shahzad brought his fifty in this Asia Cup while Hashmatullah Shahidi continued his rich vein of form.
However, Pakistan struck twice to bring the equation to 31 from 18. But with Mohammad Nabi still in the middle and Rashid Khan yet to come, Afghanistan had a slight edge. On the other hand, Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza held back his strike bowler Mustafizur Rahman to bowl the death overs. Nabi after playing a crucial knock of 38 runs including two boundaries and sixes each as Afghanistan needed only eight runs from the last over.
The game once again took a topsy turn as Mustafizur had Rashid Khan caught on his own bowling to take the game to the wire. He continued his good form to seal the game in his team’s favour by three runs.
