India’s interim captain Rohit Sharma believes the Asia Cup will give a chance to the team to get their combination right for the World Cup. There are still some areas on which the Men in Blue will like to improve. Therefore, the upcoming six-nation tournament is a perfect opportunity to fill the crevices in the team. One chink in the armour of the Indian team is the number four position and they would like to find a batsman who can deliver the goods.

Meanwhile, the World Cup is still nine months away and thus there will be more opportunities for India to test their bench strength. It is pivotal to invest in the right players and give them opportunities to add to their confidence.

In fact, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli have done the bulk of the scoring for the team. The middle order has been a cause of concern for the Indian team and they would like to improve themselves. Therefore, the upcoming Asia Cup gives them the opportunity to come up good.

“In a way, you can say that. Every team wants to go to the World Cup in a good frame of mind. But we shouldn’t be looking too far ahead. Obviously, the Asia Cup gives every team an opportunity to get the combination right before the World Cup. I don’t understand how Angie (Angelo Mathews), Sarfraz (Ahmed) or Mashrafe (Mortaza) are looking at it and what their strengths and weaknesses are. But as the tournament progresses, we will understand what the teams are doing,” Rohit Sharma said in the pre-series press conference.

Meanwhile, India will lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan on 19 September. Rohit Sharma believes Pakistan has played some impressive cricket in the recent past. However, it is pivotal to concentrate on the whole series rather than one game.

“Pakistan has played some great cricket of late and we are looking forward to that clash. However, by no means, I am saying that focus should be on one game as all the games that are going to be played over here will be quite competitive. The focus should be on the whole tournament because every nation is eyeing that title. Also for the first time, I am captaining in a full tournament and it’s exciting for me personally”.

India will be looking to hit the ground running in the UAE. They will definitely miss the services of their full-time captain. However, Rohit Sharma had led with aplomb whenever he has the opportunity to do so. Thus, it is imperative for India to tick the right boxes.
