Asia Cup Teams. Asia Cup is the only continental championship in cricket. The tournament is played in both the white-ball formats – ODI and T20I. The first edition of the competition was played in 1984 in which three teams – India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka participated. The tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates.

India won the inaugural edition and is presently the most successful. Since then, 15 editions of the tournament have been played. The first T20I edition was played in 2016. India were the winner of the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup and played in the 20-over format too.

India:

India started playing in the Asia Cup right from its inaugural edition – in 1984. So far, they have played in 14 of the 15 editions of the competition. They skipped the tournament in 1986 hosted by Sri Lanka due to strained cricket relations with the hosts.

India are the most successful side in the history of the Asia Cup. The winner of the first-ever edition of the Asia Cup, India have won the tournament a record 7 times. The Men in Blue also won the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup that was played in the T20I format in 2016. They won the tournament in – 1984, 1988, 1990/91, 1995, 2010, 2016 and 2018. They have also finished runners-up on three occasions – 1997, 2004, and 2008.

Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka are the only team so far who have played in all the edition of the competitions, right from the inaugural edition in 1984. They were the runner-up in the inaugural edition, losing to India before winning their first Asia Cup title in 1986.

Sri Lanka are the second most successful team in Asia Cup with 6 titles to their name. They won the competition in the ODI format 5 times before winning it in the T20I format in 2022. The Islanders won the competition in – 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2022.

Pakistan:

Apart from India and Sri Lanka, Pakistan are the only other country to win the Asia Cup. Like Sri Lanka and India, Pakistan also began their campaign as the continental champion in 1984. So far, they have also played in 14 of the 15 editions of the Asia Cup.

Pakistan boycotted the 1990/91 edition hosted in India because of poor bilateral relations with the hosts. They have won the tournament twice. Pakistan won the Asia Cup for the first time in 2000 before winning it again in 2012. The Men in Green have finished runner-up in the competition on three occasions.

Bangladesh:

After India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have played in the most editions of the Asia Cup. They did not play in the inaugural edition in 1984. However, the Bangla Tigers have played in all the editions from the second one onward in 1986.

While they are yet to win the Asia Cup, they have made it to the final on three occasions. Their first appearance in the final came in 2012 where they lost to Pakistan. In 2016 and 2018, they made it to the final but ended up on the losing side while facing India.

Afghanistan:

One of the most improved sides in international cricket in recent years, Afghanistan is fast becoming a force to reckon with. So far, they have played in the Asia Cup on three occasions – 2014, 2018 and 2022.

In 2018 and 2022, they managed to progress to the Super 4s as they registered impressive wins over fancied opponents like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In 2018, they also tied a game with eventual champions India.

Hong Kong:

Hong Kong have played in 4 editions of the Asia Cup so far. They made their debut in the competition in 2004 and are yet to progress ahead of the group stage. They played in the Asia Cup in 2004, 2008, 2018, and 2022.

United Arab Emirates:

United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the only six teams who have played in the Asia Cup. They made their first appearance in the competition in 2004 and have played in just one more edition after that. On both occasions, failed to progress ahead of the group stage.
