MS Dhoni is known for his decision making skills. So much so, that when he is present on the field, he becomes the go-to man even for India captain Virat Kohli and the bowlers a like. But on deciding his future with the Indian cricket team, MS Dhoni has visibly shown his struggle. He has been stubborn enough not to communicate about his ‘exit plans’ with anyone, leaving speculations about his future rife.

His initial two-month break from international cricket was extended as he never made himself available for the succeeding series’. MS Dhoni has been in thick of things because his future and diminishing show in the World Cup 2019. His last international appearances clearly depicted he has lost touch as a finisher as his strike-rate continued to dip. It also questioned his reliability in the side although his skill to read the game remains unmatched.

Atul Wassan: MS Dhoni left it too long, should have informed about his plans

There are two set of people as the novel coronavirus pandemic has postponed IPL indefinitely. One who think MS Dhoni never wanted to play for India anymore and has decided his future the other who think he will still be included in the side for a mega-event due to his stature. Former India cricketer Atul Wassan feels MS Dhoni left it for too long to make a decision and should not be considered by the Indian selectors again.

Wassan feels every player should inform about their exit plans well in advance as it is otherwise unfair on the selectors, team and establishment. Adding, young wicket-keeper batsmen KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are right up there and good enough to take his place. He also reckoned sometimes a big name like ‘MS Dhoni’ works but his current performance does not matches to his name.

“I’m a big supporter of (MS) Dhoni, but he left it too long. He never played after World Cup, he is not saying what he wants. Every player should inform about their exit plan, it’s unfair on the selector, team and establishment,” Atul Wassan said in an exclusive interview to CricketAddictor.

“He (MS Dhoni) would have thought, I will perform in the IPL and return but I don’t think selectors should consider him. Even if he would have played IPL then also it would have been a big question, we have KL Rahul as option, Rishabh Pant. Both good players. Dhoni’s name is enough but his performance was not matching his name,” he added.

MS Dhoni made his last appearance in the World Cup 2019. A veteran of 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is, Dhoni has, however, contributed to the fore for the national team since his debut in 2004.
