Australia’s ODI and T20I captain Aaron Finch is disappointed after not delivering the goods in the four-match series against India. Finch was asked to open the innings but failed to get going against the new ball. In fact, Finch believes he tried to play too many shots to get back into form and thus he veered off the track.

Finch had scored a valuable knock of 51 runs in the second Test match at Perth and had stitched a partnership of 112 with rookie batsman Marcus Harris. However, apart from that innings, Finch was all at sea against the potent Indian bowling line-up.

Finch regrets not to have the patience.

Meanwhile, many former players believe the ideal position for Finch was in the middle order. However, as Finch had a merry start to his Test career while opening the innings against Pakistan, the Australian team think tank backed him to do the same in home matches. However, there was a day and night difference between the conditions.

“In the past I’ve been very good at being able to manage how much I hit, how much I train in terms of working on feeling good versus working on technique, trying to work on footwork patterns and stuff,” Finch said.

Finch said he tried to bail himself out and get into form by trying to hit too many balls. Thus, Finch felt trap in his own web as Indian bowlers were right on the money.

Finch could not come good.

“It was my choice to keep hitting balls. You’re searching for form, you’re searching for something, and you don’t want to walk out after getting out in a Test match or a one-dayer, or anything, and think ‘jeez if only I had have hit some more balls’. That was a really hard thing to do, to not bat. I know that I’ve had success not batting in the past. In fact, I just didn’t have the courage to stick to it.

“When I was dropped from the one-day team after a really lean run – at times you’d like to have some bullets to fire back, but there are just none.”

Finch would like to turn the tables.

The combative right-hander believes he deserved to get dropped from the fourth Test match at Sydney. Finch could only score two fifties in the five Test matches he has thus far played and feels he had to make way for other players.

“I hadn’t got any runs,” he said. “That’s the reality. Two 50s in five Tests. I said this before when I got dropped from the one-day team, you’d like to have some bullets to fire back but there’s just none when you’ve made two 50s and average 16 for the series. I think it would have been a pretty easy call to be fair.”

Aaron Finch will like to turn the tables in the upcoming three-match ODI series against India. The first ODI will place at Sydney on January 12.
