There is a saying called ”Everything happens for a reason”. Perhaps, it is the best suit to Mayank Agarwal, who was waiting for his chance in the Indian Cricket Team for many years. Finally, he got his maiden cap and it was the historic Boxing Day Test, in which, he made his debut. He made it a fruitful one with a fine knock to his name.

The right-handed opening batsman, who replaced Prithvi Shaw scored fifty right in his first game. He dominated things with his class and received accolades from the cricket fanatics across the world. Meanwhile, speaking to Hindustan Times, Mayank Agarwal revealed that he was pretty excited with the call-up.

“I was very excited when I got the cap and I was looking forward to getting on the field and start playing. Wanted to get into the thick of things and get cracking. It helped in many ways that we batted first because I was into the action and did not have enough time to think about other things. Had to be switched on from the word go, and it was nice I believe,” Mayank told Hindustan Times in an exclusive interview.

Playing in Australia is a tough task – Mayank Agarwal

The Karnataka lad furtherly added that playing in Australia is always a big task to achieve for a cricketer. He feels that the Test cricket in Australia is always a huge pressure, as it puts you in a nervous moment.

Further, he also spoke on how it felt for him while opening the innings at MCG stadium. Mayank Agarwal quoted that it was a surreal moment for him to play in front of the packed stadium in Australia.

“Playing in Australia is very competitive. They play their cricket hard and they are a top side. It is a different experience and very different from what I had played, compared to even the IPL. The situations, the pressures, you come across so many different situations and pressures and that is the beauty of Test cricket. But having said that, all the runs I scored in domestic circuit gave me all the confidence.

“When I walked in, I was nervous, but was excited to be playing on the Boxing Day. I went into the middle and looked around, the first thought that came to my mind was ‘Well Mayank, you are in the middle of something big’. It is like a colosseum. Massive, noise, and a very big occasion.”

All in all, it was a great debut series for Mayank Agarwal in Australia. Over the last few months, Mayank Agarwal has been scoring runs on a consistent basis to knock the selection doors. He finally got the chance in a high-voltage series.

It would be interesting to see how things would pan out for Mayank Agarwal in his career ahead. If he continues his glorious form, he will be in the scheme of things for the One Day Cricket as well.
