Average Age Of Each Team In IPL 2020

The IPL is a platform for the young players to the oldest of them since its inception in 2008. It often happens that a team comprises of a larger group of more senior players than their counterparts. While their experience indeed holds plenty of relevance in a tournament like IPL; however, the players’ movement on the field might cause trouble.

As far as the current season of IPL goes, there are quite a few players who are aged and specifically teams, which have accumulated so. For such sides, the average age is significantly higher than their counterparts, which could spell difficulty in a fast-paced format like T20.

We take a look at the average age of each side in IPL 2020:

Rajasthan Royals – 25.80 years:

Rajasthan Royals has their oldest player in Robin Uthappa, who is 34 years in age. Australian seam bowler Andrew Tye comes next with 33 years followed by Aniruddha Joshi with 32. Skipper Steve Smith, Varun Aaron, and David Miller are the only other ones touching 30s.

A few are teenage cricketers in the squad and most of them age between 20-30. Rajasthan Royals could be viewed as a side that has enormous talent; however, have very few experienced players to depend on. Hence, the inaugural IPL champions could stutter for that reason.

Kolkata Knight Riders – 26.64 years:

Kolkata Knight Riders’ oldest player is the captain himself Dinesh Karthik, who is 34 years old. English limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan comes next, who is 33 while Sunil Narine and Andre Russell are 31 each. Their youngest is Kamlesh Nagarkoti, who is 18 at present.

Kolkata Knight Riders snapped Australian speedster Pat Cummins for a record price of INR 15.5 crores. The presence of Morgan gives the franchise’s middle-order stability and strength that they dearly needed. The two-time champions also have an exciting opener in Tom Banton, who has attracted plenty of attention.

Delhi Capitals – 26.91 years:

Delhi Capitals’ oldest player is Amit Mishra, whose 157 wickets is the second-highest in IPL history. Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin come second in this regard with 34 years of age. Their youngest cricketer is Nepali cricketer Sandeep Lamichanne.

The franchise consists of quite a few players who are in the range of 30s. Hence, it has a perfect mix of youth and experience. The Delhi Capitals has received quite a lot of backing to lift their inaugural IPL trophy this year and reached the playoffs last year for the first time since 2012.

Kings XI Punjab’s oldest player is the Universe Boss Chris Gayle, who is 40 years old at present and continues to yearn to play. Following that, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Jordan, and Krishnappa Gowtham are the ones, who are 31 each as few are teenagers while others’ age range between 20-30.

Kings XI Punjab revamped their coaching staff ahead of the 2020 edition of IPL, appointing Anil Kumble as the coach, Wasim Jaffer as batting coach, Charl Langeveldt as bowling coach, and Jonty Rhodes for the fielding department. Under a new captain in KL Rahul, Punjab will look forward to breaking its title drought.

SunRisers Hyderabad – 27.28 years:

SunRisers Hyderabad’s oldest player is keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, who is 35 years of age followed by Mohammad Nabi, who is 34 and their skipper David Warner, who is 33. The likes of Jonny Bairstow, Manish Pandey, and Sreevats Goswami are the only others who are at the range of 30 years of age.

The Orange Army’s youngest players are India’s U-19 skipper Priyam Garg and bowler Abhishek Sharma, who are 19 years old. The 2016 champions’ success significantly depends upon their opening combination; however, they need their middle-order to deliver impactful performances.

Mumbai Indians – 27.38 years:

Mumbai Indians’ oldest player is their left-arm pacer Mitchell McClenaghan (33 years) followed by their captain Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who are 32. The likes of Trent Boult and Dhawal Kulkarni are 30 and 31 years of age, respectively.

Mumbai Indians opened their campaign against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday in a losing effort, tasting a defeat by five wickets in Abu Dhabi. It was their sixth defeat in the UAE, dating back to the initial phase of the 2014 season. The defending champions produced an underwhelming batting performance.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – 29.29 years:

Royal Challengers Bangalore has as many as ten players, who are or above 30 years of age. And the oldest amongst them is speedster Dale Steyn, who is 36 years. Royal Challengers Bangalore will open their campaign on Monday against the 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai.

RCB is also one of the most underperforming sides in the history of IPL. The franchise finished last on the points table in 2019 and 2017 and ended sixth in 2018. They have bought players to plug their death bowling holes and reduce the overdependence on Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers.

Chennai Super Kings – 30.5 years:

Often known as the Dad’s army, Chennai Super Kings has many as 11 players, who are above 30 years of age, representing an average age of 30.5 years. Their squad has six cricketers who are aged 35 or more. The oldest amongst the lot is leggie Imran Tahir, who is 40 years followed by their skipper MS Dhoni, who turned 39 this July.

However, CSK is also amongst the firm favourites to win the title this time. The three-time champions opened their campaign with a five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians on Saturday. It was Faf Du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu, amongst the old shoes, who struck vital half-centuries to script a resounding win.
