Babar Azam Appointed As Sarfaraz Ahmed's Deputy For The Sri Lanka Series

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has retained Sarfaraz Ahmed as the skipper on the recommendation of the head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq. Meanwhile, the young batsman has been promoted as Sarfaraz’s deputy, PCB chief Ehsan Mani said on September 13 (Friday).

Babar has been the face of the Pakistan team in the last one year and led the batting unit from the front. He was also one of Pakistan’s lone performer in their dismal World Cup campaign. After consistent outings, PCB has rewarded him with more responsibilities.

On the other hand, Sarfaraz Ahmed will continue to retain his chair as the captain for another term. There were speculations that the incumbent skipper might lose the leadership responsibility after lack of intent during the World Cup. But Misbah has backed Sarfaraz to continue.

Sarfaraz has led Pakistan in 13 Tests, 48 ODIs and 34 T20Is, winning four, 26 and 29 matches respectively. Under his leadership, Pakistan has reached the top spot in T20I rankings and also won the Champions Trophy in 2017. Commenting on the same, Sarfaraz Ahmed said that it is a matter of honour and pride for him.

 “I feel humbled and honoured to have been awarded an extension to my captaincy term. I have enjoyed captaining the Pakistan cricket team and look forward to improving my leadership qualities under the new set-up of Misbah-ul-Haq who also has a proven record as captain,” Sarfaraz said.

The wicket-keeper batsman, Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has played most of his cricket under Misbah-ul-Haq, now wants to make a good combination and take Pakistan cricket to the road of glory. Misbah and Sarfaraz’s first assignment will be the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

“I have played most of my cricket under Misbah and we know each other pretty well. I think we will make a good combination, which will contribute to improved performances of the side across all formats,” he concluded.

The selection committee will name a 19-member probable squad for the T20I and ODI series on Monday (September 16). A national camp will take place after which they will take a call on the final squad on September 23.
