The Barmy Army mocked the Aussie team as they ran short of reviews when Dawid Malan was trapped in front by a quicker delivery from Nathan Lyon during the 4th day’s play of the 2nd Test at the Adelaide Oval. Australia wasted two reviews earlier which proved costly for them, but the English fans didn’t leave any opportunity to taunt Steve Smith and Co. The Barmy Army signalled review in unison to make a mockery of the Aussies.
It was an eventful day’s play as England bounced back strongly to end the day on even stevens. The visitors still require 178 runs to pull off a sensational come from behind victory and with still six wickets in hand they will back themselves to chase the total down. It was a great bowling performance by James Anderson and Chris Woakes who finished with 5 and four wickets each to skittle the Aussies out for a mere 138 runs in their 2nd essay to keep England in the game.
The visitors got off to a solid start as openers Mark Stoneman and Alastair Cook shared a fifty run stand, but Australi again got the upper hand when both fell in quick succession as England were reduced to 54/2 from 53/0. Starc was at his usual best and bagged the wickets of Stoneman and James Vince. Nathan Lyon prized out Cook as England lost three wickets for just 91 runs.
After that, it was skipper Joe Root and southpaw Dawid Malan who started resurrecting the innings a solid partnership between each other. Root who looked out of touch in the first three innings of the series got the much-needed lift and went on to reach yet another Test half-century. He struck some delightful shots in the process and remained unbeaten on 67 when stumps were called for Day 4.
With the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali still to come and with Root batting in the middle England will be looking forward to pulling off a miraculous victory. Even Australian spin legend Shane Warne quipped that it would be sensational if England managed to chase the total down and level the series. It will intensify the series more.
