With an aim to bring more excitement and transcend the level of innovations in T20 cricket, the stakeholders of the Big Bash League [BBL] has come up with three new rules- X-Factor, Power Surge, and Bash Boost- for the upcoming edition of the franchise tournament.

The three new playing conditions involve changes in Powerplay rules, a reward for being ahead of the opposition at the halfway mark, and substitution rules.

X-Factor Player

The X-Factor is a revamped version of the discarded ‘Super-Sub’ rule which was tried in One-day International cricket back in the mid-2000s. According to this rule, the 12th or 13th player on the team sheet can now come into the game after the 10th over, replacing any player who hadn’t batted or bowled more than one over.

Bash Boost

According to this rule, if the chasing team is above the equivalent 10-over score of their opposition, then it will be awarded one point even if they end up losing the game.

If the chasing team fails to score the equivalent 10-over score, then the fielding side will be awarded the point.

Teams will now be awarded three points for every win they register in the tournament as opposed to 2 points that they used to get in previous editions.

Power Surge

The traditional six-over powerplay- where only two fielders are allowed outside the inner-circle- has been reduced to four overs. The remaining two overs can be used by the batting side at any point from the 11th over of the innings, where just like the powerplay, only two fielders will be allowed outside the inner circle.

“The introduction of these new innovations is yet another reason why the KFC BBL|10 season is set up to be the most exciting in the League’s history. The Power Surge, X-Factor, and Bash Boost prioritise scoring, exciting cricket, introduce new strategic angles and ensure there’s always something to play for throughout the entire match,” Cricket Australia’s head of BBL, Alistiar Dobson was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“We’re confident our fans will love what these innovations bring to the game as many of the world’s top T20 players, plus our next generation of Australian stars, bring them to life on field.” he added.

Trent Woodhill, KFC Big Bash League’s player acquisition and cricket consultant added-

“The best T20 leagues across the globe are the ones that continue to innovate, push the boundaries and challenge the status quo. The introduction of these new Playing Conditions firmly puts the KFC Big Bash League in that category. There’s now more emphasis on the role of the coach, more for our fans to look forward to and more for our broadcasters to speak to during each KFC BBL game,’

“Despite the challenges of this winter, we’ve got more star overseas players coming to the KFC BBL than ever before and now an ambitious set of innovations to shake up the League. I can’t wait to see our players and coaches embrace these new concepts.”
