The Bangladesh selectors recently announced the 16 member squad for the upcoming tri-series also involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe scheduled to kick off on January 15. It will also mark the first international fixture of the calendar year for all the three teams, and there is no doubt about the fact that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will be looking forward to leaving an impression on their first home assignment this year.

Ahead of the start of the tri-nation series, the selectors have taken some bold decisions which include the omission of two regular players Soumya Sarkar and fast bowler Taskin Ahmed. According to reports in bdcrictime, the chief selectors have justified the reason behind dropping these two regulars from the side.

Speaking about Soumya Sarkar, the chief selector said that the left-hander has been playing across all three formats of the game for quite a long time now. However, his inconsistency has cost him a place on the side. He, however, added that Sarkar continues to be in the scheme of things for the future series.

“Soumya has been playing in all the formats for quite a time now. I have no question about his ability. But as he is not consistent, we have decided to give him a break. Soumya is in our system. If he becomes consistent again, then we will think about him,” quoted BCB’s Chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu.

Now coming to Taskin, the fast bowler has lost his place in the side following mediocre performances on the South African tour where the conditions ideally suit his style of bowling. The BCB selectors feel that Taskin must work on his game in the domestic circuit and then make a return. Following the Tri-series Bangladesh will host Sri Lanka in a Test and a T20I series.

“Taskin was not in form in the South Africa tour. It is now important for him to play domestic matches. That’s why we dropped him,” Nannu said while explaining the reason behind dropping Taskin.
