When BCCI selected the last India head coach, things had not really gone according to plan. The episode started when Anil Kumble sensationally stepped down as head coach after the 2017 Champions Trophy, citing the problems that cropped up in the dressing room. Even before the process of appointing the coach began, there were rumours that Ravi Shastri would become the next coach because of his good rapport with Kohli.

Eventually, Ravi Shastri went on to become the head coach. Former India opener Virender Sehwag, who too had applied to become the coach, had come down hard on BCCI after the turn of events. Well, such an episode is unlikely to happen this time around. Ravi Shastri‘s tenure will come to an end after the West Indies tour. His contract was set to end at the end of the World Cup before the BCCI extended his stay by 45 days.

The BCCI has already invited fresh applications for the post of coach and has laid down some strict criteria. Ravi Shastri, however, has been given direct entry. However, Shastri is unlikely to get much favour this time around. According to reports, Kohli will have no say at all in the selection of head coach this time around.

As per India Express, the final decision will be taken by a steering committee, headed by former India skipper Kapil Dev, and approved by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA)

“Last time, the captain (Kohli) had expressed his difficulty, or the team’s difficulty, with former coach Anil Kumble. In the new selection process, he will have absolutely no say with regards to who becomes the coach. This time, we have Kapil Dev in the coach selection committee, and he will not listen to him (Kohli),” said an official.

India are currently gearing up to travel to the Caribbeans for a full fledged series, comprising Tests, ODIs and T20Is.
