BCCI Joins Coronavirus Fight By Donating Rs 51 Crore

In a brilliant gesture, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Saturday,  pledged to donate Rs 51 crore in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has been wreaking havoc across the world. As of now, more than 20,000 people have succumbed to the deadly outbreak.

The condition in India is not that promising either. While the Indian government has managed to keep the outbreak under control so far, there are still more than 900 positive cases so far. More than a dozen people have died in the country so far. The country is currently under complete lockdown in an effort to stop the transmission of the virus.

And at a time when people across the country need support, the BCCI has come up with a brilliant gesture. The richest cricket body in the world announced that the board along with the affiliated state associations will donate INR 51 crores to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES Fund).

“The outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-1) is first and foremost a public health emergency and the BCCI has a firm resolve that the nation gets all possible help to cope with the testing times,” BCCI stated in a statement.

“The BCCI will contribute to Hon’ble Prime Minister’s initiative which is a dedicated national fund (PM-CARES Fund) with the primary objective of dealing with emergency or distress situations.

The Board along with its state associations will continue to monitor and work closely with the Government of India, state governments and other state regulatory bodies and are committed to providing support to the state machinery in the face of adversity,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the cricket fraternity has stepped up to help the country during the testing times. The likes  of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan and Pathan brothers – Irfan and Yusuf – have helped the needy.

Gambhir and Tendulkar has pledged to donate Rs 50 lakh for the cause while Ganguly has pledged to donate rice worth Rs 50 lakh. On the other hand, Yusuf and Irfan have donated face masks while Dhawan has donated to the Prime Minister’s relief fund. Dhoni, on the other hand, donated Rs 1 lakh.
