There is little denying the fact that players are the biggest shareholders in any sports and cricket is not an exception at all. But at the same time, one also cannot deny the fact that just players are not enough for the smooth conduct of a game. For that purpose, the likes of umpires and match referees are extremely important.

The officials play a huge role in ensuring that the games are conducted smoothly. While the umpires’ duties start from the first ball of the match and end right after the final ball is bowled, the match referees’ duties are much bigger and extensive. Unlike the umpires, the match referee remains off the field of play at all times during the actual play of the game.

The match referee’s responsibility is to ensure that the ICC Cricket Code of Conduct is upheld during the game, to assess any breaches of the Code, and to hand out penalties for any breaches. After the conclusion of the game, the match referee composes and submits a match report to the main body.

Thus one can say that match-referees really put in a lot of hard work. However, they rarely get the credit for their hard work. The fans rarely praise them for what they do. But unlike the fans, the cricket bodies know the value of the match-referees and thus pay them a hefty fee. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the amount it paid to the referees for their services in this year’s IPL.

On August 21, the BCCI released the details of payments made above Rs. 25 Lakh during the month of July. It included information about the fee received by match officials during the IPL 2019 season. Well, by looking at the figures one can say that the match-referees are very well-paid. In fact, the figures show that there are a number of players in the IPL who earn less than the amount received by the match-referees.

Here is a list showing the amount received by them:

Javagal Srinath: Rs 52,45,128

Manu Nayar: Rs 41,96,102
