BCCI Should Be Holding Fresh Elections In 90 Days, Says CoA chief Vinod Rai
Committee of Administrators (CoA) has stated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should be holding elections in three months.
Continuing its fast revamp of the BCCI administration, the CoA has made it clear that under normal circumstances, the BCCI should hold fresh elections in 90 days. This comes just days after the introduction of a new constitution for the board. CoA chief Vinod Rai confirmed the development while speaking to the media in the Capital on Monday.
He also added that the committee will step away and hand over functioning powers to the new officials as soon as they come into office. Rai said that the CoA wouldn’t overstep the mandate given to them by the Supreme Court by even a day.
“We are looking at elections in about 90 days. We have given the date as September 20. There is no cause for any ambiguity,” CoA chief Vinod Rai said at a media meet on Monday. “The COA will leave the moment the new body takes over. There is a specific mandate that has been given to the CoA, rest assured we will not overstep it by a day,” Rai added.
While the BCCI is set to follow the verdict of the Supreme Court, there are some confusions over how its member bodies would operate. Reports suggest that some state associations are still objecting to some reforms approved by the apex court.
Rai, however, made it clear that there should be no confusion and stated that the associations ‘should mirror the BCCI constitution’.
“As far as the BCCI is concerned, the new constitution has come into effect and there is no two ways about it. The Supreme Court order is very clear. It says the state association should mirror the BCCI constitution. So whether it is a committee or a trust or a co-operative, it has to mirror the issues which are in the BCCI constitution,” he said.
“There are some practical difficulties. And some associations have moved court for clarification. Hence, it will not be appropriate for me to interpret any of the clauses in the constitution since it has been brought before the court,” Rai added.
Meanwhile, the associations have been given time till September 20 to file a compliance report.
