Ben Stokes will lead England in the first of three match Test series against the West Indies, starting July 8. It will be a first captaincy stint for the prolific English all-rounder after he captained a team was during an academy game against Scotland when he was a teenager. Ben Stokes is looking to make the most of his opportunity.
Regular England Test captain Joe Root will miss the first Test due to the birth of his second child. Root has shown his support for Stokes to come out good as a captain in his first international Test as a captain.
Ben Stokes: Getting the opportunity to captain England is a huge honour
Ben Stokes likes to play the aggressive brand of cricket. He famously save England from the jaws of defeat in the Headingley Ashes Test. Stokes will look to inculcate the aggressive brand of cricket in the team when he takes the charge. It is likely that Stokes will be an in the face and give it back sort of captain.
However, Stokes said that he is honoured to get the opportunity to captain England. But he thoroughly understands the situation in which he is set to lead the charge.
“Getting the opportunity to captain England is a huge honour. Even if it’s only the once, you can say you captained England,” Stokes said overnight.
“So it’s something that I’m looking forward to if the opportunity presents itself. But also I know I’m only stepping in to take over the reins because of Joe’s personal situation.”
Stokes averages over 36 in the longest format and nearly 41 in the ODIs.
