Ben Stokes Should've Been Given Out In The 2019 World Cup Final, Says Ex-New Zealand Skipper
Former New Zealand skipper Glenn Turner believes Ben Stokes should have been adjudged out for obstructing the field in the ICC World Cup final last year. The six overthrows in the final over of the match was a major talking point as England beat New Zealand to win their first-ever World Cup.
England needed nine runs from three deliveries with Ben Stokes at the crease and teammate Adil Rashid at the non-striker’s end. The fourth delivery was hit by Stokes towards deep mid-wicket as the two batsmen scrambled for two runs. A throw from Martin Guptill accidentally hit the outstretched bat of a diving Ben Stokes, sending the ball to the boundary.
Ben Stokes was then awarded six overthrows – four for the resulting boundary and two for taking the double. Those six overthrows helped England tie the game as they finished on 241, the same number of runs scored by New Zealand. The super overs also ended in a tie as both the teams scored 15. England were then handed the World Cup over New Zealand on the virtue of hitting more number of boundaries.
Ben Stokes had held his hands in the air straightaway after the overthrows so as to apologise for the unfortunate incident, but Glenn Turner feels he should have been given out.
“I think that they gave the wrong result,” Glenn Turner told Breakfast on 1 News. “But to have given out the Man of the Match at the time for obstructing the field, which ought to have happened, would have of course changed the result.
“Now that you are getting third umpires involved and they are seeing replays of things, they will be able to make those sorts of decisions in the future, I would hope,” he added.
