It is fair to say that Indian cricket has come off age by leaps and bounds in the past 20 years. There was a time in Indian cricket when barring a few players like Mohammad Azharuddin, Kapil Dev, Ajay Jadeja and Robin Singh, most of the players at best were pedestrians on the cricket field, as far as fielding is concerned.

But at the turn of the century, the emergence of Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif brought a whirlwind change to the fielding culture in Indian cricket. With Yuvraj fielding at backward point and Mohammed Kaif at covers, the duo proceeded to set new standards in the field and are revered as one of the best in world cricket.

Post Yuvraj and Kaif, Indian cricket has been blessed with a plethora of world-class fielders like Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and of-course, the superman Ravindra Jadeja.

During a Question-Answer session on Twitter, former Australian leg-spinner Brad Hogg was asked about which of Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina or Ravindra Jadeja is the greatest fielder that India have ever produced.

Hogg replied that while he would love having either of them in the inner ring, Ravindra Jadeja will be his first choice.

“All four are brilliant, would love to bowl having them all in the inner ring, but Jadeja for me. #hoggytime” Brad Hogg replied.

Meanwhile, Hogg, who was a part of Australia’s twin World Cup triumphs in 2003 and 2007 also went on to hail off-spinner Nathan Lyon for the improvement he has shown in the past 12 months. According to Hogg, Lyon has taken over the mantle from Ravichandran Ashwin of being the best spinner in the world of the current era.

“I feel Lyon has taken the mantle from Ashwin over the last year just as the best off-spinner, but I love the way both continue to improve their games and not be complacent where they are at,” Hogg said.

Nathan Lyon has thus far taken 390 wickets from 96 Tests and he finished the last decade as the highest wicket-taker among all spinners in five-day cricket.
