The Women’s T20 World Cup next year is all set to start in a cracking manner as the organisers have roped in pop superstar Katy Perry. The singer will perform before and after the Women’s T20 World Cup cricket final on International Women’s Day as organisers bid to set a world record for attendance. The organisers are aiming to set a new world record for attendance at a women’s sporting fixture during the final game of the tournament.

The current record crowd of 90,185 was set at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Pasadena, California. The tournament will start on February 21 with hosts and defending champions Australia taking on India.

“I’m all about celebrating equality and the achievements of women, which naturally happens on a global scale on International Women’s Day,” said Katy Perry, best known for songs including Roar and Firework.

“It’s no coincidence that I said yes to performing live at the women’s final on this day.

“I hope to bring a unifying, electric performance playing some of my most empowering songs for the best female cricketers on the planet and some of my greatest fans, as we all unite to support gender equality and empower people to achieve everything that they desire,” she added.

India will be looking to win their first-ever T20 World Cup next year, having finished at the semifinal stage in the last edition. The team has enough firepower in its rank to go all the way and will be desperate to fire on all cylinders. Four-time winners Australia will be the favourites to win the title once again.

Australia are hosting the tournament for the first time. In the same year, they will also hold the men’s tournament which will be played in October and November. The men’s competition will be played between October 18 and November 15. The tournament will get underway with several qualifying matches before hosts Australia take on Pakistan in the first match of the tournament-proper on October 24.
