Former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum has responded to vile trolls aimed at him from Bangladeshi fans after their country’s win over South Africa in the World Cup on Sunday. McCullm had predicted the fate of all teams in the tournament and had said that Bangladesh would finish last. The legendary skipper, who led New Zealand to the final of the last World Cup, had predicted that Bangladesh would win just one game in the competition and it would come against Sri Lanka.

However, Bangladesh proved McCullum’s prediction wrong in their very first outing by upsetting South Africa. The Tigers beat the Proteas by 21 runs to start their campaign on a winning note. Asked to bat first, South Africa piled up a mammoth total of 330 for 6 – their highest ODI total. Senior batsmen Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan starred with the bat, scoring 78 and 75 respectively.

The pair put on 142 for the third wicket before Mahmudullah helped power his side to the highest total of the tournament by scoring an unbeaten 46 off 33 balls. South Africa, on the other hand, were not at all impressive with the ball as well as bat. Quinton de Kock‘s poor run-out summed up their fortunes in this competition.

Captain Faf du Plessis scored 62 and Rassie van der Dussen scored 41 before being dismissed in the 40th over. The Proteas still had slim hope with three overs left, JP Duminy at the crease and 44 needed. However, Duminy played on off Mustafizur Rahman to depart for 45.

After the game, Bangladesh fans did not leave any stone unturned to make McCullum feel sorry for his prediction. The legendary skipper has now hit back at the fans, saying:

“Impressive performance from @BCBtigers to defeat @OfficialCSA. I expected SA to win but Bangladesh played well. In regards to my predictions, thanks for the feedback on getting this one wrong. Won’t be the last but average at the end will look alright I think. Can’t win em all ?”
