As the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) remains on the cusp of beginning, the fans and players are excited more than ever. Former Australian speedster Brett Lee has weighed in on the favourites to win the extravaganza this year. Brett Lee, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab, conversed in the Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected.

The 13th season of the IPL almost stood cancelled this year after resulting in postponement twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the ICC calling off the ICC World T20 in Australia in October this year, it allowed the BCCI to book that window for the marquee tournament. With that, the competition will begin on the 19th of September and continue till the 10th of November in the UAE.
Brett Lee picked the Chennai Super Kings to lift their fourth title in the upcoming leg and underlined their most significant strength. The yellow army is one of the most successful franchises in history, having won the IPL thrice while also making to the playoffs in every season. MS Dhoni’s leadership and their team combination are one of the primary reasons behind their dominance.
“I’d say that’s their greatest strength” : Brett Lee
The 43-year old underlined that their bunch of experienced players is their greatest strength. While Lee admitted that they have an excellent blend of young players too, their collection of seasoned players is their most significant strength.
“I reckon their strength is that their players are a bit more elderly, mature. They’ve got that youth coming through but they’ve got a lot of players who’ve been around a long, long time and I’d say that’s their greatest strength,” the New South Wales-born stated.
In the auction ahead of the upcoming season, they made some smart picks in the form of R Sai Kishore, Josh Hazlewood, Piyush Chawla, and Sam Curran. On the other hand, the likes of MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja Shane Watson, Deepak Chahar, and Ambati Rayudu are the backbone and proved their worth every season. They lost to Mumbai Indians last year by one run at the final in Hyderabad.
