Former West Indies skipper Brian Lara has lavished praise on India skipper Virat Kohli and called him the ‘Ultimate Captain’. Kohli has done exceedingly well as captain across formats since taking over from MS Dhoni, the most decorated captain in the history of Indian cricket. Kohli had large shoes to fill in and so far he has exceeded all the expectations.

What has set Kohli apart from his predecessors and his contemporaries is his exceptional batting. Kohli has led the team from the very front and thus commands very high respect from his teammates. He recently became just the second Indian captain to lead India in the 50 Tests and his record is really exceptional.

Out of the 50 Tests, he has led India to victory in 30. Only two captains have had more victories at the same stage – 37 for Steve Waugh and 35 for Ricky Ponting. Kohli’s predecessor MS Dhoni had 26 wins in his first 50 Tests. India are also at the top of the ICC Test Rankings for over two years now and are also at number one in the ICC Test Championship table.

“He’s (Kohli) the ultimate captain. In terms of his performances, he leads by example. And I mean that in all facets of the game, and off the field too. He is came off very well in the background of MS Dhoni, who laid the foundation, and did things in a different way,” Brian Lara told reporters in Mumbai.

“So, I think Indian cricket, as we all know, is headed in the right direction. It’s influenced by some of the best people, and is reaping the benefits of it,” he added.

Under Kohli’s captaincy, India have defeated South Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, West Indies, New Zealand and Bangladesh in Test series. Earlier this year, India registered their first-ever Test series win on the Australian soil.
