The growth of franchise cricket not only helped in the evolution of cricket but also dented the game in many ways. One of them is players preferring to feature in it rather than showing interest in playing for the country. Meanwhile, the legendary cricketer Brian Lara suggests a new policy for the supreme board.

The scenario became more often in Windies Cricket, where chief players are not preferring to play for their country. It didn’t serve well for Brian Lara, as he wants the players to take pride in playing for the country.

They should bring stipulation for players – Brian Lara

The former Windies great termed that the evolution of cricket because of the franchise leagues has been great. But, in the meantime, he added that players should not give the main preference for it over playing for your country.

He feels that the respective boards should bring a policy like asking the players to feature in certain matches for the country before throwing themselves into the open market. Lara feels it would do the trick for the respective countries.

“I think it’s great (all the T20 leagues), but in terms of preserving the importance of playing for your country, I think there’s one little issue with that – the younger players who want to concentrate on getting an IPL contract or a Big Bash contract. Maybe there should be a stipulation where you have to represent your country so many times before you go out ‘open market’,” he said.

“I know a few players where if you offered them an IPL contract tomorrow or playing for the West Indies, they are most likely going to take the IPL contract because maybe there’s more money or more excitement. That’s the only thing I feel should be stemmed, something should be done,” Lara added while speaking to BBC.

However, it seems like Brian Lara has given a valid suggestion for the respective boards. By applying the rule, one can see the players showing their interest in playing for their country before placing their name in franchise cricket auctions.
