Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma have hit the ground running as opening partners in Tests. The two batted together as openers for the first time against South Africa in the ongoing home season and made an instant impression. With Prithvi Shaw out of the team and KL Rahul out of form, India decided to promote Rohit Sharma as an opener and the move has paid off thus far.
Both the players started their journey as openers by sharing a mammoth stand of 317 runs against the Proteas in Vizag. While Mayank scored 215 in that game, Rohit scored 176. In the following match, Mayan scored another century before Rohit scored his maiden double ton in the third Test of the series. And those performances have pretty much sealed the two players’ spot in the team as openers at least for the next few months.
Murali Vijay on Mayank-Rohit:
With Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma doing well in Tests, out-of-favour India opener Murali Vijay has lavished praise on the two. The Tamil Nadu batsman, with nearly 4000 Test runs, said that it was brilliant to see the two openers doing well.
“Brilliant to see Mayank and Rohit do well. It is great to watch Rohit bat and make a wonderful start as a Test opener. I feel they should be given a fair run. The openers that are waiting in the wings should be taken care of too,” Vijay was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
Vijay has not played for India since the tour of Australia last year. He was dropped from the team after the Perth Test and is yet to earn a recall. The right-handed batsman is currently busy playing for Tamil Nadu in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
