One just cannot keep Steve Smith out of the main action for long on a cricket field and the Australia star proved it again in the ongoing Test against New Zealand in Perth. The former Australia skipper had a rare failure with the bat on Thursday as he was out for just 43. However, the former world number one Test batsman made up for it by taking an absolutely unbelievable catch.

And that amazing effort from Steve Smith helped Australia take the prized scalp of Kane Williamson. Australia made the most of the breakthrough and ended day two of the day-night Test well on top. At stumps, New Zealand were reeling at 109 for 5 with veteran Ross Taylor holding firm from one end while receiving very little support from the other end.

Earlier in the day, Australia started the day in 248 for 4 and were all out for 416. Overnight centurion Marnus Labuschagne was the first wicket to fall when Neil Wagner castled him for 143. Travis Head went on to complete his fifty while there were some handy contributions from Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins too.

In reply, New Zealand started disastrously and lost their openers – Tom Latham and Jeet Raval – with just 1 run on the board. Williamson and Taylor then steadied the ship by adding 76 runs before Starc dismissed the former. The left-arm pacer went on to dismiss Henry Nicholls and Wagner on consecutive deliveries to leave the visitors reeling at 97 for 5.

Super catch from Steve Smith:

Steve Smith’s catch was perhaps the highlight of yet another fine day of Test in Perth. It was a poor shot on an outgoing delivery from Williamson and Steve Smith made sure to make the New Zealand skipper pay a hefty price for it. The ball was flying towards Smith’s right direction before he stretched himself fully and plucked the catch while being airborne.

Here is a clip of that catch:
