Former Sri Lanka ODI skipper Chamara Kapugedera has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, confirmed Sri Lankan reporter Azzam Ameen. He last played for Sinhalese in domestic cricket earlier this year in March.
Kapugedera made his ODI debut in 2006 against Australia and was a permanent member of the squad till 2010. He struggled to perform consistently and was later dropped from the side before he made another comeback in 2015. His talent has never been in doubt, but in international cricket, that raw ability has not usually translated into runs. Perhaps many will argue that Chamara Kapugedera was asked to bat too low in limited-overs cricket to have a major impact on the game. Nevertheless, his returns were modest, and his place in the side became untenable, for a few years at least.

He has played some knocks here and there, but it was never enough to settle his place in the playing XI. Kapudegara played a match-winning knock of 38 off 21 balls which included two fours and three sixes in the first final of the VB Series held in Australia in 2006. Kapugedera’s knock ensured Australia lost their first home final in 9 years.
Chamara Kapugedera has represented Sri Lanka in 8 Tests, 102 ODIs & 43 T20Is scoring 2745 across all the formats. He has had a start-stop career for the national side and never really settled in the playing XI. Currently, he is coaching Saracens Sports Club and looks to pursue his career in coaching.
