With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 auction looming large, the franchises are looking to build a strong team to be in the title race. As a result, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have decided to release England batsman Sam Billings, who will now go under the hammer in the auctions.

The MS Dhoni-led Chennai procured the services of Billings in 2018 when they signed him up for his base value of ₹1 Crore. Sam Billings donned the yellow jersey in 10 matches in his first season scoring 108 runs at an average of 13.50, which is quite low considering his standards.

But a man of the match effort in that season against Kolkata Knight Riders helped him secure his position for another season. But luck didn’t favour Sam Billings as he was knocked out of IPL 2019 due to an injury playing only one game for the Chennai side. Previously, Billings has also represented Delhi Capitals (previously known as Delhi Daredevil).

Chennai Super Kings after finishing one step away from the title in the last season will be desperate to make up for the loss. As a result, they have decided to free up one of the overseas player’s place by parting ways with Sam Billings, a report in Mumbai Mirror says.

The England T20I vice-captain boasts a strong CV in the shortest format of the game and might be in the hot list of many franchises during the auction. The auctions for the Indian Premier League 2020 will take in Kolkata on December 19.

Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings are eyeing on the new English star Tom Banton who has hogged all the limelight during the T20 Blast. As speculation rise, Chennai will look to replace the 28-year-old Sam Billing with star opener Banton for the upcoming season.
