There is absolutely little denying that almost all the major cricket playing nations have started their own franchise-based T20 tournaments after being inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL). The unprecedented success of the IPL has inspired the likes of Pakistan, West Indies, South Africa and Australia to have their own franchise-based T20 tournaments.
Sri Lanka is now also set to start their own T20 tournament – Lanka Premier League. In fact, the tournament will start this month only on August 28. After the Caribbean Premier League, which starts on August 28, the Lanka Premier League will become the second T20 league to be played amid the pandemic.
The IPL connection:
Taking inspiration from the IPL has been taken to a different level altogether by Sri Lankea. A total of five teams – Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna – will be participating in the tournament. And the names of all the five teams are inspired from the IPL teams.
Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to officially come up with the names of the franchises but their names have already started turning heads. As per a report in the Sunday Times, the team’s names are Colombo Super Kings, Galle Lions, Kandy Royals, Jaffna Sunrisers and Dambulla Capitals. All the five names are inspired by the names of IPL franchises.
Colombo’s team name has been inspired by Chennai Super Kings while Galle have taken a cue from Gujarat Lions, who were part of IPL 2016 and 2017. The names of Kandy, Jaffna and Dambulla are inspired by IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals respectively.
According to reports, a total of 70 cricketers have been listed for the tournament. The likes of Liam Plunkett, Dwayne Smith, Tim Southee will be some of the biggest attractions when the players’ draft takes place later this month.
