Jamaica Tallawahs (JT) and Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) won their respective matches on the second day of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL). While the Jamaica-based outfit beat St Lucia Zouks (SLZ), the Warriors beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SNP).

Jamaica Tallawahs vs St Lucia Zouks:

Having failed to make it to the playoffs in the last season of CPL, both Jamaica Tallawahs and St Lucia Zouks were eyeing a fresh start. But Zouks’ poor run in the competition continued as the Tallawahs thrashed them by five wickets to start their CPL campaign with an impressive win.

Asked to bat first, Zouks finished their innings on 158 for 7. They started poorly and were reeling at 64 for 3 in the eighth over before Roston Chase and Najibullah steadied the ship. The duo added 52 runs for the fourth wicket to set the platform for a competitive total.

Leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane broke the stand when he dismissed Najibullah for 25. Chase, however, went on to start his campaign with a fine fifty and was out for 52 off 42 balls. The likes of Mohammad Nabi and Daren Sammy failed to provide the finishing touches to the innings as Zouks ended on 158.

In reply, Tallawahs chased down the total with seven balls remaining. They too started the proceedings with the bat on a poor note as Chadwick Walton and Nicholas Kirton departed with just 13 runs on the scoreboard. But before Zouks could make further inroads in the game, Glenn Phillips and captain Rovman Powell added 63 runs for the third wicket to bring the chase on track.

There was another twist to the story as Zouks forced their way back into the match by dismissing both Powell and Phillips in quick succession to reduce Tallawahs to 84 for 4. However, Asif Ali and Carlos Brathwaite made sure to take their team home.

Brief scores:

St Lucia Zouks 158/7 in 20 overs (Roston Chase 52; Mujeeb Ur Rahman 2-25, Veerasammy Permaul 2-34) lost to Jamaica Tallawahs 160/5 in 18.5 overs (Asif Ali 47*, Glenn Phillips 44; Kerisk Williams 2-32) by five wickets.

Guyana Amazon Warriors vs St Nevis Kitts Patriots:

In the second game of the day, the Warriors beat Patriots by three wickets to register their first win of the tournament. Both the teams had suffered losses on the first day of CPL 2020.

Asked to bat first, Patriots could only manage 127 for 8 in their allotted quota of 20 overs. They started well with the bat and were 53 for 1 in the sixth over before the dismissal of opener Evin Lewis derailed their innings. The Patriots kept losing wicket at regular intervals and eventually finished on 127. Keemo Paul starred with the ball, taking 4 for 19 off his 4 overs.

In reply, Warriors rode on Shimron Hetmyer’s 71-run knock to chase down the total with three overs remaining. The Warriors also kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Hetmyer’s second fifty in as many games saw them home.

Brief Scores:

Guyana Amazon Warriors 131/7 in 17 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 71; Rayad Emrit 3-31) beat St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots 127/8 in 20 overs (Evin Lewis 30; Keemo Paul 4-19, Imran Tahir 2-18) by 3 wickets
