The ongoing onslaught of the global contagion coronavirus has locked up the entire world in self isolation. The world of sports has also been put on a backburner with a majority of the tournament including the IPL, La Liga, Olympics, NBA postponed or either canceled.

While places like Europe and the United States of America have been worst affected by the proliferation of the pandemic COVID-19, the same cannot be said about the Caribbean islands, where thanks to early strongest measures, the dealt toll is yet to reach double figures in any of the six islands.

And, as a result, Caribbean Premier League chief operations officer Pete Russell is confident that the franchise-based league could well go ahead on its scheduled time in September albeit behind closed doors.

With the IPL getting postponed for an indefinite period, specifications have been rife whether the tournament could be rescheduled in the September-October window. Russell said that while the CPL will not try to compete with the IPL, he hopes that the BCCI will figure out its own window.

“We wouldn’t go up against it. While I know the BCCI is all-powerful in these things, there has to be some sensible consideration around what players and other leagues are doing,” Pete Russell was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Russell said that that Indian Premier League will want the star West Indian players to play in the cash-rich tournament and with them involved in the Caribbean Premier League at the time, it wouldn’t really make sense for BCCI to hold the tournament during that time.

“I think IPL would want all the West Indian players to be playing in their tournament – it wouldn’t make sense for them to play at the same time as CPL when a lot of their stars are playing with us. That would defeat the objective. I don’t think they need to do that, either. They can figure out their own window, for sure.” Russell added.

The 13th edition of the IPL was originally scheduled to take place from March 29th but with the situation around COVID-19 steadily escalating, the BCCI initially postponed it till April 15. But with the situation not really improving, the apex board announced that the 13th edition has been postponed until further notice.
