Cricket ACT is hopeful to find out by the middle of the year when Canberra will host its first Test. But Australia’s premier spinner, Nathan Lyon will pray for a turning wicket on his return.
Notably, Lyon was dispatched to the stands five times in an over in a game against England. Lyon was representing Prime Minister XI when David Willey hit him for 34 runs during England’s chase. Willey displayed some clean hitting, as 8000 spectators were left in awe.
Interesting, Lyon used to work as a groundsman in this ground before he got noticed.
Cricket Australia will likely finalise its schedule for the 2018-19 summer in June or July, with Canberra to host a historic Test between Australia and Sri Lanka.
The Test is likely to be played in January after Australia’s four-Test series against India. Cricket Australia is also considering Canberra contest as a potential day-night fixture.
Lyon, who had a brilliant Ashes was whipped off by Willey in his second over.
“I’m just very thankful that Dave Willey didn’t play in the Ashes,” Lyon said after the match.
Lyon’s teammate Peter Handscomb dismissed that it will affect the off-spinner’s career. He further tries to prove to the selectors he can perform at the highest level in limited-overs cricket.
“I wouldn’t be too worried about bouncing back. He’s the greatest (Australian) offspinner of all time, so he’s doing just fine,” Handscomb said.
Handscomb believes Lyon’s ability to rise above adversity has been crucial in his rise to being a key part of Australia’s lethal Test attack. Willey also stated that it wouldn’t have a lasting effect as it is part and parcel of T20 cricket.
“Sometimes you bowl well and go the distance, and other times you can bowl pretty poorly and pick up wickets. That’s just the nature of Twenty20 cricket,” Willey said.
“There’s no doubt he’s an unbelievable bowler, his record and success shows that,” Willey added.
