India head coach and former all-rounder, Ravi Shastri turned 56 on Sunday (May 27).

Shastri has also made a considerable mark in the commentary box, commentating some of the most memorable moments in Indian history like Dhoni’s World Cup-winning six in 2011 or Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in the inaugural World T20.

Before making his mark as a commentator and coach, Shastri impressed with his cricketing skills at the international level. He was the part of the squad that won the country’s first World Cup in 1983.

Shastri represented the country in 80 Tests, and 150 ODIs. The most memorable moment of his career came during the 1985 Benson & Hedges World Championship in Australia.

In that tournament, he amassed 182 runs and claimed eight wickets. He was the chief architect of India’s victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final, picking up a wicket and scoring an unbeaten 63. Shastri was named the ‘Champion of Champions’ for his stunning all-round performance.

In the same season, he hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket. Overall, he amassed close to 7,00 international runs in addition to picking up 280 wickets.

Shastri is also enjoying a stellar stint, as the head coach of Indian team. Under him, India registered their first bilateral series win in South Africa. Virat Kohli & Co. had beaten the Proteas 5-1 in ODIs earlier this year and had also won the subsequent T20s.

Since replacing Anil Kumble last year, Shastri guided India to series wins over Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand as well as the win in the Nidahas Trophy.

Meanwhile, messages poured in from all quarters on Shastri’s birthday. Here are some of them:
