Ab de Villiers announced his comeback to Test cricket yesterday by completing his 10000 runs in first-class cricket. The South African stand-in skipper was just two runs short before the start of the day’s play, and he entered the elite list with a triple off Mpofu on third delivery he faced.

De Villiers’ first-class highest score – which is also his highest Test score – is 278* which came against Pakistan in 2010. In first-class cricket, De Villiers has scored a total of 24 first-class centuries and 53 half-centuries.

Talking of his records in Test cricket, he has scored 8074 runs (his innings of 53 not included) in the longest format of the game, and if he continues to play for few more years, then he might become just the second player after Jacques Kallis to scores 10000 Test runs for South Africa. Hashim Amla is also in the race to score 10000 runs for his side as he is just above De Villiers with 8583 runs in Tests.

On day 1 of the Test, it was a double bonanza for De Villiers as he achieved this milestone in his comeback to Test cricket and to add to it; he was also leading the side as Faf du Plessis was ruled out ahead of the day’s play due to viral infection. Along with him, Dale Steyn was also ruled out due to the same reason.

South Africa opted to bat first in the historic day/night four-day pink ball Test match and posted a total of 309/9. In reply to it, Zimbabwe were four down for at the end of the day’s play on a score of 30.

South Africa though suffered another jitter during the game as Quinton de Kock has suffered a hamstring strain and is doubtful to keep wickets in the game. In fact, he is doubtful for the first Test against India as well. AB de Villiers will continue to keep wickets in the ongoing Test.
