India legend and former chief selector, Dilip Vengsarkar, could be back in the role for his second stint. As per a report in Mumbai Mirror, ‘there is every chance’ that the former India batsman can again be the chief selector of the Indian cricket team.

Vengsarkar performed the role from 2006 to 2008 before being replaced by Kris Srikkanth. During his tenure, Virat Kohli got his maiden call-up to the national team and is now the captain of India across formats.

Vengsarkar played 116 Tests and 129 ODIs in which he scored 6868 and 3508 runs, respectively. He was also a member of the World Cup-winning team in 1983 and also captained India for a brief period during his career.

Presently, the MSK Prasad is the chief selector of the Indian cricket team. He took over the position in 2016, repacing Sandeep Patil. It is unlikely that all the members of the present selection panel will be retained and there are chances that few members could be dropped.

Under the present selection panel, India played two ICC tournaments. At Champions Trophy in 2017, Men in Blue ended up as the runner-up while in World Cup 2019, team India crashed out of the tournament after losing to New Zealand in the semi-final.

A call on the new selection panel will be taken at BCCI’s AGM on October 23, the date when Ganguly Sourav Ganguly will officially take over as the President of The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

On Sunday last week, Brijesh Patel was the front-runner for the post but later in the evening, Ganguly confirmed his candidature to become favourite for the position. There can be a case when Patel might replace Ganguly once he leaves the office in September 2020.

Presently, the board is run by Committee of Administrators (COA) which is headed by Vinod Rai. Anurag Thakur, who had been elected in May 2016, was board’s previous President.
