After two fiercely fought finals in Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, arch rivals Tamil Nadu and Karnataka locked horns against each other in the Ranji Trophy this week. And unsurprisingly, the rivalry was fierce as both the teams gave it their all. In the low-scoring thriller, fortunes swung from one side to another before allrounder Krishnappa Gowtham’s all-round show proved to be the difference between the two sides.

But the rivalry continued even after the game ended. According to Deccan Herald, Tamil Nadu veteran Dinesh Karthik had a confrontation with opposition skipper Karun Nair. The report claimed that the two India stars exchanged words with each other before Karnataka coaches S Arvind and Yere Goud tried to calm things down.

As per the report, Dinesh Karthik was not at all impressed with the excessive appealing and non-stop chatter from the Tamil Nadu players. And as soon as the game ended, Dinesh Karthik made sure to give Nair a piece of his mind. Tamil Nadu captain Vijay Shankar, however, said that incidents like that are common when Tamil Nadu and Karnataka take on each other.

“In a Tamil Nadu vs Karnataka game, these things happen. We should be surprised if it doesn’t happen,” said Shankar.

“It was the way they behaved(that irked Karthik),” added Shankar. “It could also be excessive appealing. Look he is a senior player but sometimes it triggers us. At the end of the day, you need to move on.”

It should be noted that veteran Murali Vijay was earlier fined in the same game for his conduct. The out-of-favour India allrounder was docked10% of his match fee for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision on the opening day of the match. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu were all out for 154 while chasing 181. Gowtham starred with the ball, picking up eight wickets.
