Team India skipper fell three short of a deserving hundred off leg-spinner Adil Rashid on day one of the third Test against England at Trent Bridge.

Meanwhile, England pegged back to finish the day on even note after what has been an improved batting effort by India. The English bowlers struck thrice at the fag end of the day to bounce back.

Shikhar Dhawan, who came into the first XI partnered KL Rahul to provide a solid start after Joe Root asked India to bat first on a cloudy morning at Trent Bridge. The openers put on a gritty effort as they added 50 runs for the first wicket, their first of the series. However, against the run of play,  Woakes struck thrice to put India on backfoot.

The visitors once again pegged back in second innings banking on a solid performance from Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. The duo dominated the proceedings as England bowlers failed to extract any assistance from the pitch. Kohli was a class part ripping off the opponent bowlers with ease.

He drove well and was brilliant all-round the wicket as he played the second hand to Rahane. Kohli’s knock was filled with some gorgeous looking shots to stage his innings with the help of eleven boundaries.

Virat Kohli falls prey to Adil Rashid at 97

It was only rash shot from the Indian skipper as he departed three short from his second hundred of this series. It was tossed up delivery from the leg-spinner Adil Rashid tempting Kohli to go for a drive and reach the three-figure mark.

Virat Kohli Kohli got forward but had to reach out for it, ran his hands through the attempted cover drive. The swat-drive takes the outside edge and Ben Stokes cups it at first slip much to the delight of England fans.

Meanwhile, Kohli was livid with himself as his expressions suggest while walking back to the pavilion. However, it was no short of a century in its magnitude and in a time when India needed the most.
