England skipper Joe Root could not stop gushing about the beauty of Tests after his side sealed the thrilling first England vs India game in Edgbaston.

It was a game that would remain etched in the memories of the fans and the players for a long long time. The game did not witness big scores, it did not witness too many batting masterclasses neither did it witness any single bowler wreaking havoc. However, the game served a perfect reminder as to why Test cricket is still the pinnacle when it comes to test a player’s skills and temperament.

The game swung from one side to another throughout before England finally managed to win it by 31 runs. The game kept the fans on the edge of their seats throughout. If it was India who took the upper hand by dismissing England for 287 in the first innings then England also did well by taking a 13-run lead despite Virat Kohli scoring a majestic 149.

In the second innings, India had the hosts on the mat by reducing them to 87 for 7. However, a 63-run knock from Sam Curran helped them post 180. It eventually turned out to be the difference.

At 141 for 6 with Kohli and Hardik Pandya on the crease, the game was slightly tilted in India’s favour. However, Ben Stokes dismissed Kohli and Mohammed Shami inside an over to put England on top. Pandya threatened to run away with the game but Stokes struck again to remove Pandya and fire England to a stunning win.

A delighted Root could not hide his excitement in the post-match press-conference, starting the interaction by saying:

“Anyone saying Test match cricket is dead can watch that on repeat!”

“What a game!” he added.

Root further hailed his side for the performance and also credited bowlers of both the teams for their superb efforts.

“I’m still trying to sort of soak it all in but it was a fabulous team performance. This morning we spoke about showing the belief and desire that we had done in the previous three days and if we stayed calm and trusted all the previous areas we’d been bowling then we’d get our rewards and I think we did just that so I’m really proud of the group.

“We knew wickets were going to be quite crucial, but the way that this Test match had gone to that point it always seemed that if you took one wicket you were going to get two or three. We always felt like we were in the game and the ball swung throughout. Credit to both bowling sides actually, India’s attack and obviously ours. I think it’s important that you don’t underestimate how well people have bowled on there,” he said.
