Michael Vaughan lauded Virat Kohli after the latter scored a stunning century to bail India out of trouble in the ongoing first Test against England.

The odds were firmly stacked against him, the conditions were against him, the history was against him. However, all the hurdles made little difference in the end as Virat Kohli once again showed why he is the best in business at the moment. It was not the most fluent of innings from Kohli’s blade but he is surely going to cherish it for a long long time.

The India skipper scored 149 as the visitors recovered from 100 for 5 to score 274. It took Kohli just one innings to banish the horrific memories of 2014 tour where he had managed just 134 runs in 10 innings.

Kohli came out to bat when India were in a precarious position. Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay gave the team a good start by adding 50 runs. However, Sam Curran dismissed Vijay and KL Rahul quickly to leave India reeling at 54 for 2. 5 runs later, Dhawan departed too.

Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane steadied the ship for a while before Ben Stokes struck twice. The all-rounder dismissed Rahane and Dinesh Karthik quickly to reduce India to 100 for five. But Kohli held firm from one and and waged a lone battle.

He also enjoyed good fortune, getting two reprieves. And the right-hander made the most of it by smashing his first Test ton in England. Kohli slapped a Ben Stokes delivery past backward point for his 14th boundary to reach his century in the company of last man Umesh Yadav in the final session of play on Day 2.

He hit top gear after passing the 100, adding another 49 runs with the tail to take India to within 13 runs of England’s first-innings total. Adil Rashid finally dismissed him to bring an end to a stunning knock.

After the knock, former England skipper Vaughan took to Twitter to laud Kohli, writing:

“That’s an incredible knock @imVkohli !!! 1 man battle against the moving ball ….. #ENGvIND”
