The pivotal five-match series between England and India kicked off from August 1 (Wednesday) at Edgbaston. While winning the toss, England decided to bat first. Virat Kohli made an unprecedented decision in the selection of his playing XI. He left Chetheshwar Pujara and carried on with KL Rahul. His decision raised many controversies, and many cricket experts like Sanjay Manjrekar felt dissatisfied with it. Pujara’s axe whips up selection debate.

It was not only a different decision made by Kohli just before the play. He picked experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin over new spin wizard, Kuldeep Yadav.

India went on with a lone spinner on a surface which has been quite dry.

Earlier, Pujara decided to play in County cricket for Yorkshire to enhance the exposure of England. He batted himself out of form and out of the team by reaching England early and played County Cricket.

Pujara is having an average of 50.34 in Test cricket, but he has not been in a good nick recently. However, his form in County cricket was mediocre. Pujara averaged just 14.33 from 12 innings for Yorkshire.

In the three-day practice game against Essex, he could not manage to score a big. He scored a duck in the first inning and scored just 23 runs in the second inning.

Overall, Pujara failed to deliver what India would have been expecting from him.

However, even in his absence, Pujara did not fail to win the heart. Pujara was helping the opening batsman of India, Murali Vijay while practising. In his tweet, Manjraker praised his selfless act and shared the video as well.

The tweet reads:

“This is what team sport teaches you. Pujara is not playing, but making sure that M Vijay gets the best possible preparation before he goes into bat.”
