Former India batsman lavished praise on Rishabh Pant after the youngster slammed his maiden Test ton in the ongoing fifth England vs India Test.

Rishabh Pant made his much-anticipated debut in the third Test at Trent Bridge and made an instant impression. On the very second ball he faced, he dispatched Adil Rashid for a six to get off the mark in Test cricket. He went on to score 24 and take seven catches to receive widespread praise.

However, things only went downhill after that game. In the first innings of the fourth Test, he conceded as many as 23 byes. What has further made things tough for him is his poor returns with the bat. Since his debut innings, his scores in this series read  – 1, 0, 18 and 5.

But in his last innings of the series, he proved his worth in gold by compiling his maiden ton. He had joined fellow centurion KL Rahul in the middle when India were reeling at 121 for 5 in the first session while chasing an improbable 464. And from thereon, the duo especially Pant thoroughly dominated the hosts to revive India’s hopes. They shared an unbeaten partnership of 177 to take India to 298 for 5 at tea.

And as soon as he reached the ton, the accolades poured in from all corners. Former India batsman Virender Sehwag also lavished praise on Pant, calling his knock impressive. He also praised Rahul who was batting on 142, tweeting:

“Opened account in Test Cricket with a 6, first century in Test Cricket with a 6. Very impressive young man- Rishabh Pant. A brilliant innings from KL Rahul as well. Shining light amidst a difficult tour.”
